Content Description James W. Wilson (1832-1910) was influential in the promotion and construction of railroads in North Carolina. He served with the Confederacy during the Civil War. In 1864, he was appointed superintendent of the Western North Carolina Railroad and in 1876 was elected president of the Western. Wilson later served as chief engineer for other railroad companies, and was responsible for engineering many of the rail lines which first penetrated the western North Carolina mountains.
