Content Description The collection consists of papers relating to the Fain family of Cherokee County, NC, especially Mercer Fain (1820-1893) and his sons, John E. Fain and Alfred Allen Fain. Mercer Fain settled in Murphy, NC, around 1839. He was an attorney, land speculator, merchant, and a Confederate leader during the Civil War. He was also a railroad promoter and the first president of the Georgia & North Carolina Railroad, a narrow gauge line from Marietta, GA, which reached Murphy in 1888.

Scope and Contents William Wilson (1831-1910) was a Cullowhee, NC, landowner and member of the "Noble Nine," the first board of trustees of Cullowhee High School (later Western Carolina University).Much of the collection consists of land deeds and descriptions, promissory notes, and legal papers. The land deeds are in the general Cullowhee area, although some extend into Macon County, NC. The promissory notes were held mostly by the Wilson family. ...
