Content Description Joseph Howell Way (1865 - 1927) was a prominent physician in Waynesville, North Carolina. He also served as president of North Carolina Medical Association and was recognized as an expert on tuberculosis. Way was born in Waco, Texas, but his parents moved to Buncombe County in the early 1870s. His father, C.B. Content Description

The one item in the collection is an indebtedness agreement dated January 1, 1857, between William Holland Thomas and Nacheuh (?), a Cherokee. The agreement specifies the terms of the debt, which concerns Thomas acting as an agent for the "Buffalo Indians" (members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee) of Graham County (NC) in some land transactions.

The materials probably were collected by William Holland Thomas III, grandson of William Holland Thomas, who was the first Indian agent for the Eastern Band.The collection also contains genealogical data.
