Principal topics include: (1) Charles Lanman, including correspondence and research materials concerning Lanman; Lynn Harris Heft, “Charles Lanman: Cultural Networking in the Nineteenth Century” (dissertation, Drew University, 1996); photographs and slides of Lanman’s paintings; and “Index for the Research Inquiries of David M. Sherman into the Life of Charles Lanman;” (2) Arnold Guyot, including correspondence, research materials, and copies of articles; (3) Benton MacKaye Trail, including correspondence; project history; MacKaye Trail Association correspondence; newsletters; publications and maps; (4) Appalachian Trial, including correspondence and research materials; (5) miscellaneous materials, including photographs and postcards featuring western North Carolina; photo-album of Mount Mitchell (1936); booklet entitled “High Knob, Virginia’s Contribution to Romance and Beauty” (1922); issue of American Journal of Science and Arts (January [sic May], 1861); art brochures featuring Southern Appalachians; publications and maps featuring the Appalachian Mountains, National Forests, Mt. Mitchell, Benton MacKaye Trail, Appalachian Trail in Georgia, and Georgia’s Amicalola Falls State Park -- Mt. Oglethorpe Trail.
