Alan & Stephen Sellars Papers
Scope and Contents
The Alan & Stephen Sellars Collection is a collection of photographs of the construction of the Champion Fibre Company paper mill in Canton, NC. The mill, under construction from 1905 until 1908, was, for a time, the largest paper mill in the world. These photographs show various stages of construction, including the management of the flow of the Pigeon River, site preparation and foundation construction, framing, interior and exterior construction, and installation of machinery. Several photographs show construction workers, nearby homes, and views of the town of Canton, NC.
These photographs were gathered by a family member of the collection’s donor from the home of Thomas Marr, supervisor of the plant’s construction, after his death. Many of the photographs appear in Carroll C. Jones’s book, Thomson’s Pulp Mill: Building the Champion Fibre Company at Canton, North Carolina, 1905 to 1908 (Johnson City, TN: Jan-Carol, 2018).
