Content Description

This collection contains Civil War letters of the McFee family of Buncombe County, NC, and the Misemer family of eastern Tennessee. The McFee letters are written by brothers Alex Marion McFee (1831-1880), John Erwin McFee(1835-December 1862), Jeptha Christenberry McFee (1837-1862), and Andrew Harrison McFee (1841-1896). They are four of the twelve children born to Charles B. McFee (1804-1870) and Sabra Warren McFee (1809-1906).

The Misemer letters were written by Henry Marshall Misemer (1832-1865), chiefly to his wife, Martha. There are also letters written by Martha Misemer; Martha’s brothers, Levi M. Bogart and Solomon Bogart; Philip Misemer, and Felix Misemer. Of particular note, Solomon Bogart writes of surviving the USS Sultana explosion, and of the deaths of Henry Marshall Misemer, Levi M. Bogart, and Charles Harrison Misemer aboard the Sultana.
