Fain Family
Content Description
The collection consists of papers relating to the Fain family of Cherokee County, NC, especially Mercer Fain (1820-1893) and his sons, John E. Fain and Alfred Allen Fain. Mercer Fain settled in Murphy, NC, around 1839. He was an attorney, land speculator, merchant, and a Confederate leader during the Civil War. He was also a railroad promoter and the first president of the Georgia & North Carolina Railroad, a narrow gauge line from Marietta, GA, which reached Murphy in 1888.
