WCU International Students and Host Families Collection

 Collection
Identifier: MSS 16-06
This collection concerns international students and the Host Family Association at Western Carolina University. Formed during the mid-1970's, the Host Family Association's mission was to assist the newly-arriving international students with the transition from life in their home country to the challenges of being a new college student in an unfamiliar country. Host families provided essentials, such as bedding, dormitory furnishings, and winter clothing. They also hosted international students for meals in their homes, and for weekend outings. By the mid-1990's, Western Carolina University had become much more equipped to provide the assistance that the Host Family Association had originally provided, membership in the Host Family Association waned, and the organization was finally dissolved.

Materials in the collection include background information regarding international students at Western Carolina University, as well as the Host Family Association; photographs of international student functions and activities; and correspondence and related materials between several of the international students and their hosts. The majority of the correspondence is to or from Nan Haberland Watkins, the donor of this collection, and active member of the Host Family Association.
