Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials related to the Mountain Youth Jamboree, an annual performing arts event in Asheville, NC, where young people from the Southeast gathered to learn and perform folk music, dance, and song. Hubert Hayes founded the Jamboree in 1948. After his death, in 1964, Hayes’s widow, Leona Hayes, continued to run the gathering until its end. The last Mountain Youth Jamboree, which was held in April 1973. It was concluded with a trip to England to the International Folk Festival in Sidmouth.

The collection contains correspondence, financial records, "prompt" books (books for theatrical productions which contain all instructions necessary for a complete productions), talent entries, photographs, newspaper clippings audio tapes, film, and cue cards. This collection includes the “25th Hubert Hayes Mountain Youth Jamboree,” a documentary about the Mountain Youth Jamboree, produced by the Public Broadcasting Service of North Carolina; information on the Memorial Hubert Hayes Log Cabin, moved from Maney Avenue, in Asheville, to Western Carolina University's campus; an episode of the "Girl in My Life," produced by the ABC network; The Lost Treasures of Peep-eye Cove, a book by Leona Hayes.

Additions to the collection contain personal documents and correspondence from Hubert and Leona Hayes as well as more material relating to the jamboree. The additions include photographs of winners and participants of various Jamborees and of autographed photographs of famous personalities. Other items include newspaper articles and brochures.
