Content and Scope

Papers of journalist and author John A. Parris (1914 - 1999).

Parris served as a war correspondent during World War II and reported from the North African and European theaters. After the war he became noted for his "Roaming the Mountains" column that was a regular feature of the Asheville Citizen and Asheville Citizen-Times newspapers and which first appeared in February 1955.

Parris' works included Springboard to Berlin (co-author; New York: Thomas Y. Crowell Company, 1943); Deadline Delayed (co-author; New York: E.P. Dutton & Company, 1947); The Cherokee Story (Asheville, N.C.: Stephens Press, 1950); Roaming the Mountains (Asheville, N.C.: Citizen-Times Pub. Co., 1955); My Mountains, My People (Asheville, N.C.: Citizen-Times Pub. Co., 1957); Mountain Bred (Asheville, N.C.: Citizen-Times Pub. Co., 1967); These Storied Mountains (Asheville, N.C.: Citizen-Times Pub. Co., 1972); Mountain Cooking (Asheville, N.C.: Citizen-Times Pub. Co., 1978); and Roaming Yunnan (Yunnan, China: Yunnan International Culture Exchange Center, 1990).
