Monteith Sisters and Family Collection

Identifier: SM 06-07

Scope and Contents

The collection contains seven photographs, four of which feature Edith Monteith (September 16, 1915 – July 15, 2001) and / or Edna Monteith (February 22, 1908 – June 25, 1988) and three featuring funeral ceremonies and caskets.

Also in the collection are six sheets of blank stationery paper with the heading “E.B. Monteith, P.M. and General Merchandise, Dillsboro, N.C.” Elias Brendle Monteith (July 14, 1876 – June 10, 1954) was, according to his obituary in the Sylva Herald (June 17, 1954, issue), “a retired postmaster, having served in that capacity at Dillsboro for 18½ years and had previously been clerk in the office for ten years.” According to Jackson County Heritage (Vol. I, p. 349), Monteith entered into a mercantile business with his brother, but that venture ceased after a few years. Later Monteith returned as postmaster of the Dillsboro Post Office.
