Scope and Contents

Two (2) letters from A.W. Farmer to his “Dear wife,” A.E. Farmer, during his service in the Thomas Legion in the Civil War. The first letter was addressed from Carter County in eastern Tennessee and dated April 7, 1863. The second letter was addressed from Freedom, also with an eastern Tennessee location indicated, and dated June 30, 1863.

Ambrose Weston Farmer (1831 – 1908) and Artie Elizabeth Allen Farmer (1840 – 1871) married on January 27, 1857. Farmer enlisted in the Thomas Legion on July 19, 1862. The reference in the April 7 letter to “little cat” (sic little Kate) is to the couple’s second child, Katherine, who died March 31, 1862, at the age of three.
