Scope and Contents Walt Whitman (1819 - 1892) was a noted American poet, as well as a teacher, editor, publisher, and volunteer Civil War nurse. He was the son of Walter and Lousia Van Velsor Whitman, of New York. Whitman is probably best known for Leaves of Grass (first published in 1855).
