The collection contains business correspondence of the Harris Clay Co., which was owned and operated by C. J. Harris, and of the Harris-Rees Tanning Co., of which C.J. Harris was president and Harold B. Rees was vice president.

The Harris Clay Co., located in Dillsboro, NC, sold and distributed clay to china (porcelain) companies throughout the United States.

The Harris-Rees Tanning Co. was started in 1902 and was located in Sylva, NC. The company processed oak leather and sold its products to companies throughout the United States.
