Catherine’s Chapel

 Collection
Identifier: SM 16-03
Catherine’s Chapel refers to a small church on Brasstown Rd in the Caney Fork community in Jackson County, North Carolina. The church, established around 1906 was named for Ruth Catherine Parker Hooper, the wife of Western Huston Hooper. Catherine was responsible for soliciting donations from community members for the establishment of a building that would serve as a school and church for the community. Huston, an employee of the Jackson Lumber Company, later known as Blackwood Lumber Company built the church and named it for his wife.

The collection consists of a “Perfect Church Record” logbook with entries dated from 1923-1953. It also includes a spiral bound book of facsimile pages of the Church record as well as a brief note about the history of the church, and three reproductions of images of Catherine Hooper, Huston Hooper and the chapel itself. It also includes three letters. The first is a handwritten letter dated July 14, 1945 from Emma Green, clerk of the Green Creek Baptist church that says that Frank Trantham was a member in good standing of that church, but is now dismissed from that church to unite with the church at Catherine’s Chapel. The second is a typewritten letter from L. L. Morgan, Statistical Secretary of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina dated from 1953 requesting membership statistics in the form of a filled out Uniform Association Letter. The final letter is a partially filled out Uniform Association Letter dated 1953 from the Southern Baptist Convention that includes a listing of church membership statistics from that year as well as a list of expenses.
