The collection contains several groups of correspondence, most of which concerns relatives of Hazel Scarborough. These groups are:



Auyer (Ayer) Cole, Asheville, NC:., letters to his family during World War I service: 1917-1918.



William B. Simpson, Weaverville, NC: , letters to his family during his military service in Korea: 1953.



E. C. Cole family, Asheville, NC: ., correspondence & papers: 1914-1918.



E. W. Roberts family, Asheville, NC, correspondence & papers: 1902-1940.



Elizabeth and Nola Morgan, sisters, Candler, NC, correspondence received: 1941 & n.d.



In addition there are non-correspondence items. One is a World War II pay book of Boyce R. Brown, of Moore, SC. There are several items relating to Dr. John Rich (1876-1954), of Candler, NC. There are materials on Robert Hamilton (Ham) Hyatt (1884-1963), of Candler. Hyatt was a major league baseball player in the early 1900s and a highway patrolman in the state of Washington in his later years. Materials on Hyatt include clippings, photographs, some correspondence, and items on Hyatt's family. Hazel Scarborough, the donor of this collection, is a niece of Ham Hyatt.



Several editions of western North Carolina newspapers are in the collection. They are:



Enka-Candler Record (Candler, NC): April 21, 1965; June 11, 18, 1969; Feb. 26, May 28, June 11, 18, July 2, 24, 25, 1970.



Enka Voice (Enka, NC): Sept. 1968.



The Enterprise (Canton, NC): May 23, 30, 1974



The Native Stone (Asheville, NC): June 17, 1971



The Weaverville Journal (Weaverville, NC): June, July 1977.



Chips, Champion Paper Company (Canton, NC): Nov. 22, 1961.



There are three editions of a genealogyfamily magazine called The Back Log: Oct. 25, 1961; March 25, 1963; June 25, 1970. The magazine concerns families with surnames of Hall, Taylor, and Hutchinson.



Miscellaneous photographs in the collection include early 1900s pictures of the Candler, NC, public school and one 1930 photograph of workers at a mill in Enka, NC. Other photographs include two of logging operations in the mountains and one of an elderly man playing a fiddle. There is also a scrapbook of photographsictures taken in Europe during the immediate post-World War II era.



Other items include a collection of clippings concerning Ms. Scarborough's family and events in western North Carolina history; a printed program concerning the sesquicentennial (1812-1962) celebration of the Hominy Baptist Church, in Candler, NC; and a scrapbook of clippings primarily on the 1977 flood in western North Carolina.
