John Moore Crawford Family Collection

John Moore Crawford (1829-1933) was a descendant of George W. Crawford, Sr., the latter being the progenitor of Crawfords in Haywood, Macon, Clay and Cherokee Counties, NC. George W. Crawford, Jr., and Lorena Moore were the parents of John Crawford. The genealogy of the Crawford family may be found in incomplete form in W.C. Allen's The Annals of Haywood County, North Carolina (pp. 558-567). See also the excerpt from Daniel's Lyle's Daniel Lyle, Immigrant, which relates the ancestry of Lorena Moore Crawford.



The collection consists of five items of correspondence, ranging in dates from 1883-1932, all letters to John Moore Crawford. Of note, one letter from Margaret McGuire, dated February 4, 1932, requests information about James Moore Crawford's brother-in-law and an organizer of the Ku Klux Klan. Also of note is a letter dated October 2, 1930, inviting Crawford to an anniversary celebration of the Battle of King's Mountain.



Items of a legal nature include five marriage licenses issued in Haywood County, NC, with inclusive dates 1812-1816. Other items in this category include land records and an indenture agreement in Cherokee County, NC, valuation lists regarding estate settlements, and two teachers’(?) certificates from Clay County, NC, issued to George and John Moore Crawford.



Business records include five items ranging in date from 1835-1887. Most are receipt and charge accounts.



Genealogy records include the Daniel Lyle excerpt mentioned above.



Finally, there are two photographs in the collection. One is of John Moore Crawford and his wife Arbezena Ledford Crawford. The other is a group picture of the 1929 Crawford reunion.
